Do You Have Prediabetes?

Now Is the Time to Reverse or Delay Type 2 Diabetes

Did you know that one in three adults in the U.S. has prediabetes, and 81% of them are unaware of it.

Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar level is higher than normal, indicating an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes within a few years. Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to heart disease, stroke, eye damage or kidney problems.

If you have prediabetes, two simple changes can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes:

  1. Lose 5–7% of your body weight. For a person weighing 180 pounds, this means losing 9 to 13 pounds.
  2. Engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, which is about 20 minutes per day.

It is important to find out if you have prediabetes, because early treatment can prevent serious complications. Since prediabetes often has no symptoms, ask your doctor to test your blood sugar level if you are over 45 years old, are overweight, or if you have a family history of diabetes.

You can cut your risk for type 2 diabetes by 50%— and lower your risk for a heart attack or stroke and improve your overall health—with just a few lifestyle changes. Source: CDC
